The biggest opportunity for OSS
openDesk is a powerful initiative of the German
government with the goal to provide a serious alternative to the proprietary Big Tech establishment. It unites
independent open source software vendors to create a sovereign work place, tailored for the public sector.

2020+: Inception of global strategies for sovereign clouds
Sovereignty & and security constraints
Creation of security standards owned by governments (ANSSI SecNumCloud / BSI C5)

Strategies for developing sovereign collaborative suites
France and Germany have two approaches to this problem.
France 🇫🇷 : Financing of 3 private consortiums from 2023 to 2026 - 23M€ total
Germany 🇩🇪 : One project, openDesk built form open source solutions - 23M€ in 2023
In February 2022, BPI launches the call for participation "Suites bureautiques collaboratives cloud".
Development planned over 4 years; the goal is to create solutions that are:
Sovereign (basically made with french technology)
Secured: obligation of compliance with SecNumCloud
Projects are financed by the France 2030 fund. The financing is split between a loan and a subsidy.
The 3 consortiums that win the call do contain some open source software solutions (XWiki, CryptPad, BlueMind, Linphone),
But their core software is not open source.

Example
Deep integration of Nextcloud and OpenProject
Let's have a look what it really means to deeply integrate two systems
Nextcloud is mainly a file storage platform
OpenProject is a collaborative project management system
Super quick explanation of what is OpenProject
Do you know JIRA? We are similar but open source, and you can host in on your own server, or get it hosted by us
You don't know JIRA? Think of task lists that you share with your team. Daimler plans cars with it, I think. Actually, I don't know. It runs on their servers :-)
Real challenges for an organisation
Problem 1: "Where are the files for my task?"
Problem 2: "Does everyone in my team have access?"
Problem 3: "I want similar projects to easily follow the same structure"
Exactly what the public sector is doing all day long.
There are almost no files without a task
There are almost tasks without files
There is almost no team with a shared folder somewhere
Repeating projects, tasks, files and folder structures need templates
Integration wins over feature duplication
OpenProject has very basic file management, e.g. attachments
Nextcloud has very basic task management, e.g Deck
Integration allows to focus on each others core strengths
Integration also outside of openDesk of great value
Deep integration also in sales
In OpenProject: Show relevant files/folders for a work package
In OpenProject: Share access by saving files in the project folder
In Nextcloud: Link a file/folder to a work package
Project templates improve quality and speed
Provide template task list
with related template files
in a template folder structure.
...to ensure
not to forget important steps
speed up the process
improve quality
